29TH ANNUAL ITS WISCONSIN
TRANSPORTATION CONFERENCE

East-West Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), presented to Mike Zabel (HNTB) and David Locher (Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS))

Milwaukee County and its transit authority, MCTS, have been working since 2015 to plan, design, and implement Wisconsin’s first BRT project and to secure a $40.9 million Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Small Starts grant agreement. The route enhances transit along the region’s most vital, most traveled, and most congested east-west corridor, and plays a critical role in advancing the region’s multimodal transportation system in a cost-effective manner that supports economic development.

Dean Beekman (Wisconsin DOT)

Having graduated from UW-Milwaukee and starting his career at the Wisconsin DOT working for SE Region PDS, Dean later transferred into the role of Statewide ITS Engineer at the Bureau of Traffic Operations (BTO). During his career, he’s most notably worked on ITS designs throughout the state many devices and the state fiber network. He’s also been responsible for ITS policies, product selections/evaluations, procurement contracts, and electrical service installations. More recently, he’s had the opportunity to be part of the team that implemented the Madison Flex Lane. Over the years, he has also been involved with the TIME program, ITS planning, ITS maintenance, and various freeway operations projects. Dean served on the ITS Wisconsin board and was president in 2012.

Dean credits his knowledge from the dedicated people he’s worked with in the ITS world for the past 20 years. He’s very grateful for the numerous partners we have in our ITS community and looking to pass on this collective knowledge to the people he continues to work with every day.

Noah Miller, UW-Platteville Junior

Noah’s interest in ITS stemmed from a trip to the Netherlands, where he learned about the Dutch transportation system, and specifically, about intelligent intersections and public transportation. This fascination was supplemented with his internship at AECOM working on the design of the Madison Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and its use of ITS. He’s been president and a traveling team leader at Engineers Without Borders and Co-founder of Sustainable Solutions at ASCE’s UW-Platteville Chapter. He aspires to have a career designing and planning urban areas.

Mia Salov, Marquette University Senior

Mia got her civil engineering passion solidified from studying abroad in Ireland where she gained a global perspective on civil engineering. Since then, she has explored the world of transportation engineering design with internships at HNTB and HGA. The potential for revolutionizing the transportation industry is what excites her most. Mia is a member of the Marquette Honors Program, Marquette University’s Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers, and the Chi Epsilon Chapter, and a consistent presence on the Dean’s List. After graduation, she’s eager to apply her skills, knowledge, and dedication to shape the future of transportation.
